We were probably too little to be doing the things we did. He was definitely too drunk to be watching us. The truth is, we loved him and he loved us. He just had us tag along to whatever the day’s adventure was. We spent months at a clip with him, under his care.

The trips were always the same. Gramps would pick us up in his old brown Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. It had one door that was lighter. He had had it replaced after some sort of mishap. He’d put us in the front seat. My brother always sat in the middle, because he’d always pee on the trip. I refused to sit there, because Gramps never washed it. I sat in the passenger seat saying Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme on as many different ways I could. It helped pass the 4 hour drive. Everyone else took only 3 hours to get there, but a trip with Gramps was just longer.

Blocked

The snoring was soothing, almost to the point of sleep, but she wouldn’t allow that to happen. It was too early. There was a piece of uneaten cake sitting on the table in front of her. Her tea had gone cold as the notebook full of sketches and ideas for new designs lay quietly next to it. Her pen was in her mouth, and she was mildly aware of the conversation coming from the television.  Continue reading
